Serving Tray Memory Game
Description

A great activity for all residents, but particularly those with early cognitive impairments, is a serving tray game that works to enhance short-term memory! This can be done in small groups or one-on-one with a resident. All you have to do is choose a few random objects to lay out on the tray. Give the resident 30 seconds to peek at the tray and then cover it. Have them try to recall as much as they can.

Goals
  1. Memory Enhancement: The primary goal of the game is to improve participants' memory skills. By challenging them to observe and remember objects within a limited timeframe, the game aims to enhance their memory recall and retention abilities.
  2. Attention and Focus: The game aims to promote participants' ability to pay attention and focus on details. By requiring them to carefully observe and remember objects on the tray, the game encourages participants to enhance their attentional skills.
  3. Visual Perception and Discrimination: The game targets participants' visual perception by engaging them in recognizing and differentiating between various objects. It aims to improve their ability to perceive and discriminate visual information accurately.
  4. Concentration and Mental Stamina: The game challenges participants to sustain their concentration and mental effort throughout the observation and recall phases. The goal is to help them enhance their concentration skills and build mental stamina.
  5. Cognitive Flexibility: The game encourages participants to switch between observation and recall phases, stimulating their cognitive flexibility. The goal is to foster mental agility and adaptability in shifting between different cognitive processes.
  6. Fun and Engagement: One of the goals of the game is to provide an enjoyable and engaging activity. By incorporating elements of challenge and playfulness, the game aims to create a positive and interactive experience for the participants.
  7. Self-Reflection and Learning: The game offers an opportunity for participants to reflect on their memory performance and strategies used. The goal is to facilitate self-awareness and learning about individual memory strengths and areas for improvement.
  8. Group Interaction and Communication: If played in a group setting, the game can foster interaction and communication among participants. It encourages sharing observations, discussing strategies, and engaging in friendly competition or collaboration.
  9. Confidence Building: The game aims to boost participants' confidence in their memory abilities. By successfully recalling and identifying objects, participants gain a sense of accomplishment and increased self-confidence.
Procedure
  1. Gather Objects: Collect a variety of small objects that can be easily placed on a serving tray or any flat surface. Choose objects with different shapes, colors, and textures to make the game more challenging and engaging. Aim for around 10-15 objects, depending on the level of difficulty desired.
  2. Prepare the Playing Area: Set up a table or any suitable surface where the game will be played. Make sure there is enough space for participants to view the objects on the tray.
  3. Introduce the Game: Explain the rules and objective of the Serving Tray Memory Game to the participants. Let them know that they will have a limited time to observe the objects on the tray and then will need to recall as many objects as they can from memory.
  4. Display the Objects: Place the objects on the serving tray or surface in an organized manner. Ensure that all participants have a clear view of the tray and objects.
  5. Time Limit and Observation: Set a specific time limit (e.g., 1-2 minutes) for participants to observe and memorize the objects on the tray. Encourage participants to focus their attention and study the objects carefully during this time.
  6. Cover or Remove the Tray: After the observation time is up, cover the tray with a cloth or remove it from the view of the participants. This step prevents participants from seeing the objects during the recall phase.
  7. Recall Phase: Ask participants to write down or verbally recall as many objects as they can remember from the tray. Set a specific time limit for this phase (e.g., 2-3 minutes). Encourage participants to recall details such as names, colors, and positions of the objects.
  8. Discuss and Compare: Once the recall phase is completed, discuss the objects as a group. Participants can share the objects they remembered, and you can compare their responses with the actual objects on the tray. This step allows participants to reflect on their memory performance and learn from each other.
  9. Repeat or Vary the Game: If desired, you can repeat the game with a new set of objects or increase the difficulty by adding more objects or introducing different themes. Varying the game keeps it engaging and provides opportunities for participants to further develop their memory skills.
Staffing Requirements

1 staff member

Supplies/Resources
  1. Tray
  2. Variety of Objects
  3. Cloth or blanket to cover tray
Risks
  1. Choking Hazard: When selecting objects for the game, avoid small objects that could pose a choking hazard
  2. Emotional Discomfort: Some participants may find it challenging or frustrating if they have difficulty remembering the objects. Ensure that the activity is presented as a fun and friendly challenge, and encourage a supportive and non-competitive environment.
Expected Outcomes
  1. Memory Enhancement: The primary goal of the Serving Tray Memory Game is to improve participants' memory capabilities. By challenging participants to observe and remember objects within a limited timeframe, the game exercises their memory recall and retention abilities.
  2. Attention and Focus: The game requires participants to pay close attention to the objects on the tray during the observation phase. It encourages participants to focus their attention and concentrate on the details of the objects, leading to an improvement in their attention and focus skills.
  3. Visual Perception and Discrimination: The game involves observing and differentiating between various objects on the tray. It enhances participants' visual perception skills, helping them recognize and differentiate shapes, colors, sizes, and other visual characteristics of the objects.
  4. Concentration and Mental Stamina: As participants engage in the game, they need to maintain their concentration and mental stamina throughout the observation and recall phases. The game challenges participants to sustain their focus and mental effort, leading to improved concentration skills over time.
  5. Short-Term Memory Skills: The Serving Tray Memory Game targets participants' short-term memory by requiring them to remember the objects immediately after observing them. By exercising short-term memory, the game can help participants improve their ability to hold and recall information temporarily.
  6. Cognitive Flexibility: The game encourages participants to switch between observing and recalling phases, engaging their cognitive flexibility. Participants must adapt their thinking and shift between different cognitive processes, enhancing their mental agility and flexibility.
  7. Fun and Engagement: The Serving Tray Memory Game is an enjoyable and interactive activity that provides participants with a sense of fun and entertainment. It offers an engaging and playful way to exercise memory skills and cognitive abilities.
  8. Self-Reflection and Learning: After the game, participants can reflect on their memory performance and identify strategies that worked well for them. They can learn about their memory strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to apply these insights to future memory-related tasks or challenges.
