Summer-Inspired Activity Ideas for June

April 30, 2024

As the warm embrace of summer approaches, it's time to infuse your senior living community with the vibrancy and excitement that this season brings. From sizzling tailgate parties to heartwarming indoor camping trips, there's a plethora of engaging activities tailored to seniors that foster camaraderie, nostalgia, and sheer joy. Let's explore some delightful summer-inspired activity ideas that will ignite the spirit of adventure and create lasting memories for your cherished residents.

Host a Tailgate Party in Your Community's Parking Lot

Summer is often the season for many of your residents’ beloved sports! Many residents still like to follow sports and will often watch them in their rooms. Let's encourage them to watch together as a group by hosting a tailgate party!

Weather permitting, you can cordon off a section of the parking lot and recruit staff or volunteers to park their cars together and set up a cooking area to grill sausages, hot dogs, and hamburgers. Coordinate with the kitchen staff to provide some side courses like potato salad, baked beans, and coleslaw. Set up tables where residents can eat and bring everyone back inside to the day room to watch the game on TV.

You can take it to the next level by hosting some friendly bets on which team will win, dressing in team colors, painting faces in team colors, and more!

Go on an Indoor Camping Trip

If renting a campground seems daunting or you're facing bad weather, why not hold an indoor camping trip? You can pitch a tent, set up some lawn chairs, and pass out s'mores while your residents reminisce about past camping trips. Many classic camp games such as ring toss can also easily be played indoors. Your residents can even share their best ghost stories around the campfire — though we’d suggest making the campfire out of tissue paper.

Make Ice Cream in a Bag

Nothing goes better with summer than ice cream! So get your residents together on a hot summer day and make ice cream in a bag! This homemade ice cream recipe takes just 15 minutes to make. Just combine the ingredients in a resealable plastic bag. Your residents will need to shake the bag to make the ice cream form, which some may need help with. Make sure you have your favorite toppings on hand to turn this activity into an ice cream social.

Join your Local Pride Parade Celebration!

Joining a local Pride parade allows them to immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of LGBTQ+ culture, advocacy, and celebration. They can march alongside fellow community members, wave flags, and show their support for equality and diversity. If your community isn’t able to join in the parade, residents can find a spot on the side to watch and wave those Pride flags!

This senior Pride event activity will require transportation and it would be a great addition to provide residents with Pride flags, banners, and other decorations to carry during the parade.

Host your own Community Pride Parade

If you don’t have a local parade to join or maybe don’t have the resources or staffing to accommodate going out to a parade, you can create your own senior Pride event and bring the festivities to your senior living community! By organizing a colorful and inclusive Pride parade right on your premises. residents can get the opportunity to decorate wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility scooters, and march together in a spirited procession, celebrating Pride month!

This is a great opportunity to invite other staff, loved ones, and the greater community to your community!

Intergenerational Drag Queen Book Reading Activity

To continue on the theme of senior Pride events in your community, you can partner with a local school and local drag queens to host an intergenerational book reading program that celebrates diversity and creativity. Residents and drag queens can come together to read LGBTQ+-themed children's books, share stories, and engage in meaningful conversations. This is a great opportunity to engage the greater community and host them in your senior living community! Invite friends and loved ones of residents to the event as well to show their Pride!
